Snap out of THAT holiday funk and get creative again

January 3, 2018

Hearing “New Year, New Me” drives me up the wall because it teaches people that they should wait for a new year before they can start being a better version of themselves. I must still admit that there’s definitely something candid about having the opportunity to start things fresh with the blank canvas we call 2018, waiting for you to paint your masterpiece of a life onto it.

Almost everyone’s got their resolutions laid out in their head, whether it be; putting out more music, getting a new camera, working with a brand you’ve had your eye on or just putting more time into your craft.  However, it can sometimes (or most times) be REALLY hard to snap out of that holiday funk and get the ball rolling again, especially if you’re like me and live in Cape Town with beautiful beaches and amazing summer weather. 😍

In the spirit of starting the year right, I decided to put together a few tips to help you snap out of holiday mode and make all those dreams come true! Here’s a list of things you can do to get productive in 2018.

1. Clean up your space.

Now this can be your work or personal space (or both) but it definitely helps to just take a day and go through all your stuff, throw/give away the things you don’t need or use anymore and get stocked up on the new tools/stationary. You could even rearrange your space and spice it up by positioning your desk differently or re-organizing your studio, adding some new pieces to the space. Slight changes like this can make your old space feel refreshed and new, making you feel ready and organized enough to tackle anything this year throws your way.

2. Make a list of everything you want to achieve this year, and put a date to it!

This is EXTREMELY important. Yes, we all have goals and we know what they are but it’s been scientifically proven that when you write something down and put a date to it your brain, including your subconscious, will start working on ways to make them possible. It will also help with making you realize that time is of the essence and buying your new piece of equipment in 6 months definitely outweighs the short-term glory of spending the next 2 days lounging around eating left over holiday braai.

Side tip: Remember to be realistic, with both your goals and the timing.

3. Get organized

Now that you have a list of all your goals for 2018, how will you make them a reality? Break down all the small steps you have to go through this year in order to make that final goal possible. Organize your year with all the things you want to do and all the smaller steps you need to take in order to get there. And start as soon as possible. Time waits for nobody, and we all have the same 24 hours in a day, make yours count! The more organized you are, the more productive you’ll be.

4. Train your mind to be still.

Which is a lot easier said than done and this one is kind of long term but it’s so common for people these days to get distracted by the smallest thing, like an Instagram notification, that you really don’t NEED to check immediately. Start with 2 or 3-minute mediation sessions once a day and just clear your mind. As you get used to this you can extend the timing but once you have the hang of it, it’ll help you tons when you’re trying to complete an important task and have already trained your brain to stay focused for longer.

5. And finally, start spending less money.

Even though it totally sucks to get back to work after the holidays one of the perks is that you’ll spend less money! After Christmas presents, Boxing Day parties and non-stop shenanigans all the way through to the 2nd of Jan, it can be difficult to stop your spending spree because your arm is in automatic swiping mode. Start thinking more wisely and strategically about your money spending and how what you spend now will impact your future, even if it’s only 3 months into the future. Instead of using your last bit of holiday money on one more day of fun in the sun, put it into a savings account and get a head start on your 2018 goals.

I hope you found at least one or two of these tips helpful and I sincerely wish the best for you this year, and hope that you achieve every single one of our 2018 goals! I have tons more tips I could share with you but if you start with these 5, I can guarantee you’re already on the path to a great year 😊
